CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – A residential development plan to build 1,200 single-family homes adjacent to the Lewis Bay Heritage Preserve was one of the many rezoning requests the Horry County Planning Commission heard Thursday afternoon.

DDC Engineers told the commission about the plans to build a subdivision on around 900 acres of land in between the Lewis Ocean Bay Heritage Preserve and a Conway mine on Old Highway 90. They also say the project could provide a connector between Highway 90 and Old Highway 90.

However, the Planning Commission had some concerns, not only because the wetlands that surround the area are protected by SCDNR, but the area is also notorious for wildfires.

Engineers say its a great area to develop a residential subdivision, and it’s one of the last pieces of land available in the area.

“The beauty of this project is it’s fairly isolated with the Lewis Ocean Bay Preserve, Old Highway 90 and the wetlands that surround the property, so we think it’s a good neighbor and a good use for that property,” says Mike Wooten, President of DDC Engineers Inc.

The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. where they’ll vote whether or not to recommend the project to County Council for approval.
