MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Officers responded to two fights, several shots fired calls, and a report of a possible bomb at Broadway at the Beach on Wednesday night.
A police report from the Myrtle Beach Police Department says officers were dispatched to Broadway at the Beach in reference to a fight around 10:10 p.m. While en-route, Broadway at the Beach security dispatch received several shots fired calls. The first officers on the scene received multiple reports of shots fired and reports of the direction the possible shooter may have ran. Officers cleared many business and restaurants and didn’t locate any subject with a gun or any shell casings.
Broadway at the Beach security said they had two active fights, but no guns or shots fired, according to the report. Around 10:35 p.m., Horry County police received reports of a possible bomb inside of Paula Deen’s restaurant. The restaurant was evacuated by officers and no bomb was located.
Witnesses said that about 15 minutes into the fireworks show, which started at 10 p.m., they saw people running and yelling that shots had been fired. The chaos was in the area stretching from around Dave and Busters to around the Ripley’s Aquarium. People who had run into bars and restaurants were encouraged to stay back from doors and windows, witnesses said.
By 10:50, Myrtle Beach Police released a statement that read in part, “Officers have responded to Broadway at the Beach regarding a large fight. During the incident, someone in the crowd referenced a gun which caused people to run. At this time, the department is investigating this incident as a fight. There is no evidence that shots were fired, and this incident is NOT an active shooter situation. A large presence of officers are on the scene to ensure everyone’s safety.”
Broadway at the Beach issued a statement on Thursday afternoon, saying:
“July 4th is supposed to be a day of celebration and Broadway at the Beach has always tried to create a festive, fun, family-friendly experience with a fantastic fireworks show for all of our guests. What happened at our July 4th celebration last night was a terrible turn of events for everyone concerned. A false rumor that there was an active shooter on the property generated widespread panic and fear. We know this was terrifying and we couldn’t be more sorry that this occurred. Since its inception more than 20 years ago, Broadway at the Beach has worked hard to give its millions of annual visitors a safe, family-friendly experience. Our security team and staff remain deeply committed to making Broadway an enjoyable place for everyone.”
