GEORGETOWN, SC (WBTW)- Georgetown County is bracing for historic flooding after Hurricane Florence.

People are sandbagging their homes and businesses, but the community also gathered at Rainey Park to pray and show unity before flood waters come this way.

The City of Georgetown Mayor, Brendon Barber Sr. put this prayer service together. He said he’s moved because he didn’t think people would even show up, but they came together before the worst is to come. Officals are predicting up to 10 feet of flood waters to come through Georgetown County. The river cresting is expected to happen Wednesday night.

The mayor said they’re working to save infrastructure like US-17. Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital did relocate inpatients to Waccamaw Hospital, and the ER will stay open. The mayor said they are prepared and wants everyone to stay safe.

“We have the Army National Guard in here, we have the Air Guard in here, we can rescue you by high level vehicles, boats, or by air. So everyone is in place. The message is to save lives. We’ll rebuild and save property afterwards,” said Georgetown Mayor Brendon Barber Sr.

There are no mandatory evacuations, but county officials are urging 8,000 people in flood-prone areas to evacuate.
