CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Some parents in Conway say an alleged sex offender is harrassing their children and they are trying to get him out of their neighborhood.
67-year-old Stephen Jordan is charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and is out on bond. Jordan previously worked as Chaplin for the Conway Police Department.
One mother said Jordan lives in the apartments behind her home. She said she’s scared, her daughter is scared and now their routine and life are changed.
Parents in the West Ridge Neighborhood said they’re concerned about Jordan being near their children.
“He follows my little girl up to the bus stop every morning to the point where I don’t feel safe with her coming outside or my other children,” said Heather Christian.
Christian said Jordan knows her daughter by name, gave her gifts, and even came into her yard while her children were playing outside. She and several parents have filed a trespassing report. Christian now arms herself with a taser.
“No mother really wants to have that conversation with an 11 year old and for her to understand that a 67 year old man wants to do bad things to her,” said Christian.
It wasn’t until she did some digging herself that she found out about the sexual conduct with a minor charge. An arrest warrant alleges Jordan fondled a 4-year-old girl in 2014. He was arrested in May of 2018 and released on a $10,000 bond.
The solicitor’s office tried to revoke his bond on Monday. Christian wanted to testify at his hearing, but a judge did not allow it because there had been no harrassment arrest or charges. However, an agreement was made.
“Clarify his bond to under no circumstances should you be having contact with people that are under the age of 16 and you’re going to have to move away from this neighborhood,” said Solicitor Jimmy Richardson.
Even though he hasn’t been convicted of a crime, Richardson said deals like that are not uncommon. Christian said she’s worried about where he goes next.
“We feel very unsafe for the next communtiy he lives in,” said Christian.
Stephen Jordan has not been convicted of any crime, and the solictor’s office said he maintains his innocence.
