MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – With many kids needing foster care, one organization brought its office to Horry County to address the growing need for more foster homes.

Willowglen Academy for Family and Children Services has been offering foster care services to kids in Williamsburg and Clarendon Counties, but recently opened up a facility in Horry County after realizing the need for more homes. They work specifically with kids who have autism, developmental disabilities, or behavioral disorders.

Of the 278 kids in Horry County foster care, 25 percent of them have some type of developmental disability. Stephanie Olsen from Willowglen said that’s what they’re trying to address by partnering with local churches to find homes for kids. “It’s not their fault that they may have developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, behavioral disorders,” said Olsen. “It’s not their fault they’re in the foster care system, and I feel as a community, it’s our responsibility to help raise those children.”

Sonny Joyner is a foster parent of nearly 12 years. He and his wife began taking in foster children after being empty-nesters. “It’s a big change, but for us, it was a change for the better,” said Joyner. Together, they’ve fostered 30 children. Joyner said he’s seen first-hand the shortage in homes for foster children. “We really need more. We need more foster parents,” said Joyner. He said though it can be challenging at times, he’s certainly seen the reward.
“It gave us more purpose for our life,” said Joyner. “With the kids we are able to help, when we can see the difference we made over a few months or a year, it makes it all worthwhile.”

Olsen said Willowglen is also offering counseling and therapy services for kids who have developmental disabilities. They’ll have information sessions all day Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for people wanting to learn more about becoming a foster parent. You can call their office at 843.215.0242 or visit them at 1991 Glenns Bay Rd. in Myrtle Beach.
