The front of the M.L. Brown building in Conway was taped off as a precaution after a community member turned in what was believed to be a piece of unexploded ordnance Thursday, according to Horry County police.

The Horry County Police Department bomb squad and U.S. Air Force EOD determined the item to be a 1899 French artillery shell, according to a Facebook post from HCPD. The shell was detonated at a safe location near Conway.

Community members in the area may have heard or felt a brief disturbance during the detonation, but all is well, the post said.

Someone brought the item to HCPD on Thursday evening to be checked out.

HCPD headquarters at the M.L. Brown building, located on Main Street, were temporarily taped off until the item could be relocated.
