HORRY COUNTY, SC (WBTW) – South Carolina Law Enforcement and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are working together to crack down on speedy drivers by participating in Operation Southern Shield. 

The purpose of this operation is to cut down on the amount of speeding accidents and deaths on the road. In 2016, there were 1,015 people killed in car accidents in South Carolina, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of those killed, 381 were because of speed. 

In Horry County, 70 people were killed in accidents in 2016, and 15 were because of speeding. That’s a decrease from the year before when 21 people died from speed. 

Other states participating in Operation Southern Shield include Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and Alabama. The operation starts Monday, July 16 and runs through Sunday, July 22.
