A woman from North Myrtle Beach has pleaded guilty in federal court to fraud charges in a check forging conspiracy.
According to a press release from the S.C. District Attorney’s office, Holly Denise Sturkey pleaded guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and pass forged securities.
Evidence at the plea hearing established that from May to October of 2017, Sturkey was involved in a conspiracy to manufacture and pass forged checks of organizations.
Part of the conspiracy involved stealing mail from mailboxes at homes in Horry and other counties to try and find genuine checks in the mail. Sturkey would then alter the checks so she could deposit them into a bank account she had access to and withdraw the money for herself.
Sturkey faces a maximum of five years in federal prison. She has not yet been sentenced.
