The North Myrtle Beach Department of Public Safety held a free ‘Refuse to be a Victim’ crime prevention and personal safety seminar on Thursday afternoon.

Dozens gathered at City Hall for a chance to learn what actions they should be taking when coming across dangerous situations.

Local residents were introduced to several strategies, including home and car security, along with weapons safety and self-defense.

But officers say the best way to prevent becoming a victim, is to be aware of your surroundings.

“The big thing is avoidance, once again, I tell people, it’s one of the first lines in the whole seminar. If you can do these things one is stay alert, is what we call aim and boundaries, stay alert, use your intuition and set boundaries,” said Officer William McLeod.

The department plans to host these free seminars at least once every quarter.
