Volunteers read to more than 3,500 Horry County elementary school students on Thursday.

It was the third annual “United to Read” program, hosted by the United Way of Horry County.

“They’re learning all different sounds and spellings. They’re learning how to read like they’re talking,” said Kelly Oldroyd, a first-grade teacher at River Oaks Elementary School. “So, it’s good for them to listen to someone read to them also.”

News13’s Patsy Kelly read to Oldroyd’s class. Volunteers all read Jen Green’s book “Why Should I Recycle?” to first-grade students.
