MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A program that allows local students to “try out the trades” launched Tuesday evening in Myrtle Beach.

More than a dozen students from Horry and Georgetown County participated in the first “Ride and Decide” Signing Day at Horry-Georgetown Technical College.

Tuesday’s “Ride and Decide” event primarily paired juniors and seniors with local HVAC companies – including Swift Services, Carolina Cool, Conway Air and Waccamaw Cooling. The pairing allows the students to get paid experience in HVAC work over the summer.

Organizers say a main goal of the program is to help students to decide whether they’d pursue the trades for a full-time career after school.

Many students had the opportunity to meet with prospective companies during “Working Wednesdays” and “Find a Job Fridays” at area high schools. The effort was backed by SCWorks, The Council of Governments and SC Department of Commerce. Interested students completed an online application that were considered by local companies.

To be eligible for the program, students must be at least 16 years old, have completed their sophomore year of high school, and have at least a C average and excellent school attendance, among other qualifications.
