The former site of Charlie’s Place in Myrtle Beach, which once served as an epicenter for African American music and heritage, will get a major face lift.

The City of Myrtle Beach is set to get about $480,000 in federal grant money to help with community development and plans to use a majority of that to rebuild and renovate Charlie’s Place.

That money comes from the more than $2 million the county gets from Community Development Block Grants (CDBG).

The property has fallen to the wayside, with a crumbling roof line and no “trespassing signs” posted on the buildings.

But with the new money, the city wants to build a small community meeting space and also preserve part of the motel.

Herbert Riley, who’s helping spearhead the efforts, said he would also like to bring shops and businesses to the property.

“This can work as an economic springboard to bring this community back to life,” Riley said. “And that’s what many of us would like to see”

The city said they’ll put bids out starting the second week of June and hope to start construction by the end of the summer.

Before Horry County Council approves the plan for divvying out the CDBG money, a series of public meetings will be held for the public to give their input on these dates:
