Myrtle Beach to update Market Common area residents on traffic concerns

Officials with the City of Myrtle Beach will make a presentation at tonight’s Market Common area neighborhood watch meeting to address traffic concerns.

City officials say they have received multiple complaints about speeding and traffic in the area.

News13 spoke to one couple who visits the Market Common multiple times a week, they say traffic in the area has at least doubled in recent years and they worry about the safety of pedestrians.

“They don’t slow down, they come up to the stop, even the red light they go right over the crosswalks, they’ll stop there so you can’t get across the street,” Becky Ostendorf said. “We’ve seen people almost get hit quite a few times.”

The speed limit on Farrow Parkway is 35, which was lowered from 45 a number of years ago. The road provides access to Highway 17, Kings Highway, the commercial district of the Market Common and the Grand Strand campus of HGTC.

The spokesman for the City of Myrtle Beach says the presentation will outline how the City plans to calm traffic and enforce speed limits in the area.

Mark Kruea tells News13, the Police Department has been doing traffic enforcement in the area daily.

“We’ve got some ideas to present to the neighborhood watch group as a start, so they understand what we’re doing and they can communicate that among their neighbors and friends and we can also reach out to the students at HGTC as well,” Kruea said.

The neighborhood watch meeting will be at 7 P.M. tonight at the General Robert H. Reed Recreation Center.
