MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The City of Myrtle Beach is making preparations ahead of Hurricane Florence.

“We are getting ready in every way possible,” Mark Kruea, Myrtle Beach City spokesperson said.

The City is working to remove the trash and recycle bins from the beaches and take down the hanging flower pots on Ocean Boulevard.

In addition to the external hurricane preparations, Myrtle Beach also has to make sure their employees are equipt to handle the storm.

“(We are making sure) that they’ve got a shelter that they can get to; that our staff who will end up working during the event will have a place to come to work and understand their responsibilities too,” Kruea said.

City officials say they have spent Sunday and Monday mornings at Horry County’s Emergency Operations Center, and they plan to relocate their staff to the center full time by Wednesday, where they will continue to carry out operations during and after the Hurricane.

Myrtle Beach employees will assist in Tuesday afternoon’s evacuation efforts to make sure vehicles are leaving safely.

“The Governor will do the lane reversals. We’ve practiced that; we haven’t had to put that into effect very often, but we need to get everybody off the beach; off the coast in a fairly short period of time,” Kruea said.

One of the city’s main focuses is making sure everyone is safe and away from the storm. They are urging the public to take extra precautions ahead of the hurricane.

“We still don’t know exactly where that storm’s going to go,” Kruea said. “If it comes here, you don’t want to be here.”
