MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Wednesday night, the City of Myrtle Beach’s Downtown Redevelopment Corporation held their very first Innovators and Creators Social.

The idea for the event was to give young people an opportunity to network and socialize, but it turned out to be much more than that.

“Ill be honest with you, that was kind of the amazing thing for me personally, says Lauren Clever, executive director for Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment Corporation, “learning that there’s a lot of talented and amazing young people here.”

The event drew a diverse crowd of entrepreneurs, creators, inventors and many artists.

“I think we should have have art walks where you can go to different galleries and you can see other people’s artwork, says Donna Catton-Johnson, a local artist, actor and director.

Creativity has always played an important role in Catton-Johnson’s life, which ultimately led her to teach art classes at two elementary schools in Horry County for 25 years.

Now recently retired, Catton-Johnson devotes her new-found free time to making sure the arts stay alive in Myrtle Beach.

“If there aren’t new people coming up being artists; if we can’t inspire young people to get involved in the arts and do something with them, then where are we gonna be,” says Catton-Johnson.

Myrtle Beach Downtown Redevelopment says they were excited and impressed by the large turnout Wednesday night.

Myrtle Beach City Council also announced they just built a new board, called the Technology Advisory Group, or TAG for short. The board will be comprised of young, creative locals who will come up with new, fresh ideas for the city’s revitalization.
