MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The City of Myrtle Beach has a special events coordinator for the first time, and WBTW talked with him about his goal for managing large events heading into the summer season.

Chris Wiggins is a native of Myrtle Beach, but most recently worked in community relations for the Atlanta Braves. Prior to that, he did event planning for various convention centers in the Atlanta area, and he also has experience as a radio promotions director.

As for Myrtle Beach, he came on the job in February, and he most recently worked the Myrtle Beach Food Truck Festival. He said he realizes public safety is the biggest challenge when thousands of people are in one place, but he said he wants to focus on keeping a relationship with public safety officials.

“With all the events coming up in the summer, working with the city of Myrtle Beach fire department and police department is very essential in keeping the citizens of Myrtle Beach safe, as well as the tourists,” said Wiggins.

As a Myrtle Beach native, Wiggins said he also wants to see more community events for people who live here. “Getting more involved with the community in this position is very important to bringing that cohesiveness back into the city of Myrtle Beach, and ensuring that quality of life for the residents is enhanced.”

Wiggins said he’s working to make sure the community can have more events in places like Chapin Memorial Park or Grand Park in Market Common. He said there is a good list of “exciting events” to come this summer and he’s looking forward to working with the local community as he settles into his new role.
