MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW)- A tethered helium balloon ride is trying to make it’s way to the Ocean Boulevard Area in Myrtle Beach, but for that to happen city leaders have to change an ordinance.

The property owner wants to test out the balloon ride called Skyrider for 180 days, but the ordinance only allows special events for 5 days.

The amusement ride will be located in an empty lot off of 8th Avenue North. The owner said they need that 180 days to test the market before building permanent structures.

City Council approved changing the special events ordinance, but there are more steps before the balloon ride officially comes to Myrtle Beach.

“City council still needs to approve the special event permit this was just the first step to change the ordinance to allow a special event to run longer than 5 days,” said Mark Kruea, spokesperson for the City of Myrtle Beach.

The owner will now present the Skyrider to the special events committee and if they approve it goes back to city council.
