MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW)- Myrtle Beach City Council approved the Myrtle Beach Police Department’s new plan to help lower crime in the city.
The plan is called “Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design” and Chief Amy Prock said it’s another way they’re working to lower the city’s violent crime rate.
One thing the plan does is help improve property maintenance by removing graffiti, keeping up with landscape maintenance, and painting on worn buildings.
The plan also talks about bringing in street vendors or performers to bring legitimate use in areas.
Chief Prock said they will enforce city and state codes to deal with poorly managed commercial properties.
Chief Prock said this will help deter crime and victimization. She also said public safety is a shared responsibility and this plan helps build a sense of community
“That means making differences not only in how the environment looks and how maintenance is preformed routinely and being able to plan in advance how your property looks,” said Chief Prock. “We’re looking where things have been dumped on the side of the road, so that we can work within our city to contact our solid waste division.”
During a presentation with the city’s downtown consultant, he said parts of downtown are not considered safe and family friendly. The mayor said this initiative is a step to change that.
