The City of Myrtle Beach is asking for feedback from city staff on a draft proposal regarding historic districts in the city.
According to city documents, the proposal would promise to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of Myrtle Beach, promote education, strengthen the economy and improve property values.
City officials are still working on solidifying the criteria for a place to be designated historic and is prioritizing creating the districts.
The draft notes several possible areas to become historic districts including the Withers Swash Neighborhood, the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, Historic Myrtle Beach, and Broadway Street.
The properties in the historic districts would qualify for federal and state tax credits. For residential districts, residents should be made aware of possible opportunities at neighborhood watch meetings.
The planning commission will make recommendations to the city council about approving the districts.
The proposal will be discussed at the next planning commission meeting.
