MURRELLS INLET, SC (WBTW) – On Sunday, 11 bands from various music genres came to Murrells Inlet to play in a free concert to benefit flood relief in Horry County.
Karen Bodiford organized the event after seeing how Socastee, Conway, and other parts of Horry County were affected by the recent flood.
“We had flood in Georgetown two years ago, and it was really, really bad, and I think it just hit home,” Bodiford said. “I was really happy and thankful that Georgetown was saved (from the recent flood). We were saved from that, but these people weren’t saved, and I thought we needed to help them.”
Bodiford has been organizing the concert for the past month, and found 11 bands who were willing to play in the benefit concert, including a county music artist who drove from Nashville just for the event.
Volunteers collected monetary donations and specific items for SC Needs Help, a local organization that provides relief items to flood victims.
I think the more awareness we get out that people actually do need help, a lot of people will come out and start to donate. They’ll start to come out and realize, hey, they really do need help,” Bodiford said.
The concert was held at the Big Beaver Bar in Murrells Inlet. The owner of the bar, Leslye Beaver, says she wanted to host the event to help the communities outside of Murrells Inlet.
“The areas that we don’t get to see everyday. I thought it was an amazing, great idea for us to be a part of,” Beaver said.
Bodiford hopes the concert will help bring normalcy to victims of the flood over the holidays.
“Thanksgiving is coming up, and it just broke my heart,” Bodiford said. “I want people back in their homes, or somewhere where they can have their own Thanksgiving.”
