More street performers could be headed to Downtown Conway

Create Conway will reimburse performers who get a busking license from the City of Conway as their public arts initiative of the year.

The organization works to educate people in Horry County about the arts and bring more public art to Conway.

Busking isn’t allowed in some other Grand Strand cities like Myrtle Beach, but it was approved in Conway last year.

A busking license is $15 and permits performances like singing, dancing and storytelling in six locations across Downtown Conway.

“There is so much talent in this county that might not necessarily go noticed because of, well, the tendency for tourists to be the main focus on a lot of stuff,” Create Conway president, Brian Roessler said.

Roessler said the organization struggled with its public arts initiative last year in the wake of Hurricane Florence as much of the Downtown area was under water, but hopes bringing in more street performers will bring more people into the City.

“Any excuse to get people back into Conway, is a good excuse to get people back into Conway,” Roessler said. “If there is a storyteller, if there is a performance dancer, a singer songwriter there, that’s going to add to the experience of the river walk, it’s going to add to the experience of the marina, it’s going to add to the experience of being in Kingston Park.”
