Man in custody after rescuers conduct search for swimmer whose friends lost track of him

A man is in custody after rescue crews conducted a search for a swimmer.

According to City of North Myrtle Beach spokesperson Pat Dowling, a group of people were “drinking” on Monday evening and went to the beach in the area of 17th Avenue South. One person went swimming and his friends lost track of him.

North Myrtle Beach Public Safety responded with jet skis and found the swimmer about 600 feet off shore, Dowling says. The swimmer fought rescuers and made it back to shore himself. He was taken into custody.

This is a developing story. WBTW News13 will provide updates as we receive them.
