Man from New Jersey dead following two-car crash in Pawleys Island

PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WBTW) – Midway Fire Rescue responded to a deadly two-vehicle crash in Pawleys Island Sunday evening. 

According to Cpl. Sonny Collins with South Carolina Highway Patrol, a Jeep and SUV were involved in a crash at 5:50 p.m. in Pawleys Island on US 17 near Professional Lane.

The Jeep had one person inside and they were sent the hospital, according to Cpl. Collins.

The SUV had three people inside. The driver and backseat passenger were taken the hospital, but the front seat passenger was killed in the crash.

The Georgetown County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 58-year-old Michael Walter of Cape May, New Jersey. Cpl. Collins says Walter was not wearing a seatbelt.  

The Jeep was traveling south and tried to turn left into a private driveway, cutting in front of the SUV, according to Cpl. Collins.

According to the Midway Fire Rescue Facebook page, the road was shut down for some time Sunday evening.

No charges have been filed, but officials are still investigating the crash, according to Cpl. Collins.
