LORIS, SC (WBTW) – Community members who want to change Loris’ reputation met on Thursday night for a “call to action.”

Sherry Whisnant, the band director and teacher at Loris Middle School, organized the event and got emotional while talking about why the city needs more positive activities for kids.

Whisnant talked about how people associate the Loris and Longs area with crime so she’s trying to create a citizens in action group to come up with ways to make the area safer and give kids and teens ways to get involved.

She plans to work with local schools, churches and law enforcement.

“There’s a lot of negativity out this way right now and we want to try to combat that because there’s a lot of good things going on and we want to make it better for our kids, the youth,” said Whisnant.

She is currently trying to recruit volunteers, especially those with experience in grant writing, construction, mentoring, neighborhood watch and security.

Whisnant said her number one goal right now to help combat crime is to start a community center. She said there is no central location for kids or community groups to gather in the city.
