Local shelter takes part in national hunger and homelessness awareness week

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is held each year the week before Thanksgiving.

New Directions, a shelter in Myrtle Beach, is recognizing the week with their own campaign for the second time.

They’re inviting people to come tour their three facilities this week, something they say gives people a better idea of the services they provide.

The organization is collecting non-perishable items and paper products that you can bring to the truck at the men’s shelter on Osceola Street.

HGTC is also collecting socks Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at their Conway, Grand Strand and Georgetown campuses.

Something new that New Directions has taken on this year is helping people get involved with the city’s train-to-work culinary program.

Students work alongside a chef instructor from HCTC and get food service certified in two weeks.

So far, three people have graduated from the program and another person is enrolled.

“One of those three who graduated last week has already been hired,” Kathy Jenkins, Executive Director for New Directions said. “It’s all about successful outcomes for us and our clients.”
