SOCASTEE, SC (WBTW) – Local disaster relief groups, SC Needs Help, 411 in the 843, and South Strand Helping Hand fed 100 families affected by the flood, let them pick out supplies, but most importantly, gave each a Christmas tree and ornament for the holidays.
“A lot of them aren’t even home yet. They don’t know what they’re gonna do, so that’s why it was important for us to bring them some light during the holidays,” Sherry Young from 411 in the 843 said.
The groups say it was important for the families affected by the flood to have a Christmas tree during the holiday season. They were able to give 100 families a tree through sponsorships from local businesses and the community.
“A gift lasts for a few minutes, especially when you’re a child. You open a toy, you play with it, and then you put it away and it’s gone, but a tree something you’re gonna take out every year,” Marnie Kennedy from SC Needs Help said.
“Even if they get a new tree, they’re gonna keep that ornament, and they’re gonna remember how the community came together for them, stepped up, and gave them something special into their home when they were really, really needing it. A tree is just a symbol and hopefully it’ll be symbolic for the rest of their lives,” Kennedy said.
