SURFSIDE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The town has talked about creating an entertainment district on its downtown oceanfront, but now, it looks to regulate what kind of music could entertain visitors.
Surfside is looking at what kind of live music can be played at restaurants or bars in a proposed entertainment district, also called the e-district. The e-district would go between Surfside Drive, First Avenue South and Dogwood Drive South.
An update to the proposal calls for no outdoor entertainment after 10 p.m. It also would only allow rooftop live music to be acoustic or acapella, meaning no noise amplifying equipment.
At a meeting Tuesday evening, Surfside’s planning commission said the police department should decide on a decibel level for noise to satisfy residents and businesses near the planned $10 million pier.
“You’re not even going to be able to even hear the music and I’ve heard people play with just one little amp or something,” said planning commission chair Carrie Johnson. “It doesn’t have to be turned up loud.”
The planning commission still needs to officially recommend the e-district before town council can vote on it.
