CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – An inmate committed suicide while being housed at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, according to the Horry County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday evening around 6:00 p.m., while conducting security rounds in the facility, an officer discovered the body of an inmate who appeared to have taken his own life, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Inmate Michael Todd Jordan, 46, had been incarcerated at J. Reuben Long since being booked on March 18 by the Myrtle Beach Police Department on various charges. Online booking records indicate Jordan was charged with three counts criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 16, and two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a child under 11, among other charges.

An autopsy was conducted Monday morning at Grand Strand Medical Center.

The sheriff’s office confirms, in accordance with Detention Center protocol regarding in-custody inmate deaths, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was contacted, responded to the detention center and is conducting an inquiry into the incident.

A preliminary investigation has indicated that no foul play is expected.
