One inmate is dead after being found unresponsive in his cell at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Conway.
According to a press release from the Horry County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Martin Bennett was found unresponsive in his cell after 10 p.m. Thursday. The officer who found him alerted the center’s medical team, who began performing CPR, and called EMS.
EMS took Bennett to Conway Medical Center, where he was taken to the Critical Care Unit. He was pronounced dead at approximately 10 a.m. Saturday. His body was taken to the Grand Strand Medical Center for autopsy which is scheduled for 7 a.m. Sunday.
Bennett was booked at the detention center at approximately 9:18 p.m. Thursday, for driving on the wrong side of the road. Bennett was arrested by the 15th Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit, according to J. Reuben Long Detention Center booking records.
SLED is currently investigating the incident, but a preliminary investigation has indicated that there was no foul play.
