MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Hundreds gathered at Chapin Park on Saturday for the 2nd Annual Women’s March in Myrtle Beach.
Those who attended the event advocated for a variety of causes, but despite the crowd’s diversity, they all had a similar goal of making their voices heard.
“I think it’s really important that people show what they feel and what they think is important. It may not change anybody’s minds, however, it does give you a sense of purpose, a sense of strength and a sense that your opinion matters,” Janet Press, a tourist from New York who attended the march said.
The overall purpose of the march was to rally women together to create change.
“We are standing at the crossroads in history. This is our opportunity to make an impact; to set things right,” Tracy Bailey, Director of Freedom Readers in Horry County and a speaker at the Women’s March said.
Demonstrators were joined by several speakers, performers and local advocates during the event. They spoke about the importance of joining together for the sake of change.
“It might be your own personal experiences that brought you here, or it might be vision. It’s a purpose and that purpose for each one might be slightly different, but it brings us together in unity to fight,” Cheryl Sievers-Cail, a member of the Waccamaw Tribe and a speaker at the Women’s March said.
For many, the Women’s March was an opportunity to take part in democracy.
“I think it’s important to uphold those principles because if we take them for granted, then we may look around one day and they won’t be there anymore,” Bailey said.
Others used the march as a chance to support women fighting to make a difference.
“We can make changes by being together. Not fighting each other, but encouraging each other, not like crabs in a barrel pulling each other down, but by being on a ladder and reaching down helping us step up,” Alester Pryor, a march attendee said.
