The 22nd annual Myrtle Beach Marathon is a canceled day for Myrtle Beach police officers; meaning if they aren’t working the roads, they’re working the marathon.
In past years, MBPD has reached out to the Horry County Police Department or the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for an explosives detection canine, but this year they have her own.
Goggles, was sworn into the force just last week and the marathon will be her first event.
“Having our own dog allows us just that quicker response for other events,” MBPD special events coordinator Henry Bresadola said. “This will be great training for her being a new dog with a new handler.”
This year MBPD also plans to use the mobile command center. The unit will allow officers to fill a gap in the coverage of City cameras.
“We’re able to follow it from beginning to end pretty much using the cameras,” Bresadola said. “We know where the first runner is, we know where the last runner is and we know where the traffic is backing up so we know where to deploy additional resources to get folks around.”
Bresadola urges, if you need to drive in the area, use the bypass as much as possible and avoid Kings Highway and Mr. Joe White Avenue until the afternoon.
