CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County is trying to crack down on people living in campers or RVs along the Waccamaw River.
The planning and zoning department decided Thursday to try changing the county’s temporary camper ordinance.
The county currently allows someone to put a camper or RV on private, rural land all year long, but people can only live in them 15 days per month. However, the county has received complaints that some campers and RVs are being lived in much longer than that.
The ordinance was put in place for anyone enjoying outdoor activities like hunting or fishing along the Waccamaw River, but planning officials say the law should be updated.
“That’s very difficult, if not impossible, to enforce, keeping up with how many days per month someone has stayed in a camper,” said county planning director Janet Carter. “So the proposal is to regulate the campers, instead of regulating the people who inhabit them.”
A public hearing will be held in Conway on April 5 before any revisions would be sent to county council.
