The Cyber Patriot team from the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology will compete in the 2019 Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition.
The Cyber Patriot team is fully student-run with the help from teacher, Blake Vaught, an Horry Georgetown Technical College professor and a local computer programming professional.
Six computer science students will travel to Charleston to compete in a series of day-long challenges in which the team will be defending against live hackers.
The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic and the Air Force Auxiliary sponsor the competition.
Much of the work the students have done to this point was in an effort to prevent hackers rather than defend against them. The students secure password files, make sure there are no users in the system, change permissions and ensure passwords meet complexity requirements.
