CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County has begun spraying the mosquitoes that have been populating in the rising flood waters following tropical storm Florence.
The county typically sprays for mosquitoes by trucks throughout the summer, however, they are now taking extra measures by adding aerial sprays, along with additional truck sprays in the unincorporated parts of Horry County.
“After an event like this where there’s been a lot of water and the mosquito populations are just growing and enormous, that’s when you’ll see the aerial spraying because we can hit so much more area in a smaller amount of time,” Kelly Moore, Horry County spokesperson said.
The county uses a mixture of chemicals it says is safe around humans and animals and is approved by the Environmental Protections Agency. It’s stormwater employees go section by section, spraying by trucks and planes throughout the county.
“We’re looking at hitting the North Eastern part of the county, all the way down.” Moore said. “You’re going to see trucks everywhere on the roads from Carolina Forest out to Loris. They’re really trying to get this problem under control, and you’ll see that aerial spraying continue throughout this week.”
According to Moore, Horry County could plan additional sprays in areas where it might be needed, once the entire county has already been treated.
“It’s a continuing process; one thing we want folks to know is that we are throwing all of our resources out at this. We’ve got all of our trucks on the roads; all of our people in trucks that we can get out there,” Moore said.
