CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County School Board is one step closer to deciding which schools will be renovated or rebuilt.
The board has been talking about the “Five Year Plan” for months. On Monday night, it made the first official decision to push three projects forward.
The top three priorities discussed are:
1. Rebuilding the Horry County Education Center (Alternative School): $13,000,000
“The condition of the current Education Center, it’s one of the lowest on our list,” said Facilities Director, Mark Wolfe. “It was on our short term capital plan but the funding got moved to other projects so that’s why it’s on the top of this list.”
2. Renovation of Aynor Middle School (adding more classrooms and parent dropoff loop): $19,669,086.
“It’s a capacity issue and a traffic issue,” said Wolfe.
3. New location for transportation, science kids, records: $7,850,660
The old transportation building was damaged by Hurricane Matthew in 2016. These three could possibly go near the current Horry County Schools administration building in Conway.
“The first two, the Horry Education Center and the Aynor Middle School, were part of the current short term capital plan but because their funding got diverted to other projects they have risen to the top of the list,” said Wolfe.
The board is expected to officially vote on those three projects in May or June. To read more about other projects and their cost click: here.
