Conway, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Council met tonight to approve a $10,000 donation from Councilman Harold Worley to help the City of North Myrtle Beach purchase the privately-owned Ingram Dunes.

Ingram Dunes in North Myrtle Beach are the highest and oldest dunes on the coast of South Carolina; they are also the last remaining stretch of undeveloped land in seaside forest that isn’t the wetlands.

The city of North Myrtle Beach wants to buy Ingram Dunes and turn the privately-owned land into a park, but if they fail to do so soon, the area could turn into a housing development.

Councilman Worley has donated $10,000 of his annual discretionary fund to help the city buy the land.

The money comes from the $20,000 of taxpayer funds awarded to each council member every year to use toward “recreation programs.”

“I think it’s a good use of the money,” Council Chairman Mark Lazarus says. “It’s a public benefit because then it’ll be a park for all of our citizens to be able to use, so it goes to a good public benefit.”

Now that County Council has approved the $10,000 donation, it can officially go toward helping to buy Ingram Dunes, however, even with this donation, more money is required to purchase the land.
