CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – The Horry County Government and Justice Center was evacuated after a suspicious package was opened.

The Horry County Solicitor’s Office received an envelope on Friday containing a suspicious substance that was opened by an employee.

According to Brooke Holden, with Horry County Government, an investigation was opened by the HCSO and the City of Conway Fire Department Hazardous Materials Unit was called in.

“The building was evacuated shortly after 1 p.m. as standard protocol,” said Holden.

People were evacuated from the building for nearly 4 hours. During that time, those who came in contact with the substance were quarantined. No one was injured.

The substance was determined not to be a threat or dangerous. Investigators do not know who sent the package and are still trying to identify it.

Conway Fire Chief Le Hendrick said they called in Horry County Fire Rescue and Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue for assistance, and when situations like this occur it’s all hands on deck.

“This was a very successful operation. It seemed like a long time, but considering the location of the substance and all parties involved, I think it was a pretty expedited process,” said Chief Le Hendrick.
