CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – As storms swept across Horry County Thursday night, fire crews were busy responding to several reports of structures hit by lightning.
Horry County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief John Fowler says as of 5 p.m., first responders were aware of four different lightning calls and multiple car crashes connected to the storm.
A home on Sugar Bush Road in Longs was struck Thursday night and when firemen arrived, the house had smoke in it, but no one was injured. Another home on Darby Lane in the Carolina Forest area sustained damage when the garage was struck in the same storm. Fire officials say a commercial building on White River Drive in the River Oaks region was also impacted by the lightning.
Battalion Chief John Fowler also added that a transformer was hit on Theater Drive in the Fantasy Harbor area.
Outage maps from Santee Cooper reflect that 1,110 customers were without power Thursday evening in the area of Coastal Grand Mall, Broadway at the Beach and parts Fantasy Harbor Boulevard. The estimated restoration time was 8 p.m., according to their website.
No injuries were reported in any of the calls for structures hit by lightning, according to crews.
