CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – It’s been six months since Hurricane Florence made landfall and plenty of Horry County families are still not back in their homes.
Passing by flood impacted areas, you can hear the sound of hammers and drills, with plenty of debris in yards.
A large majority of homeowners in the Rosewood neighborhood on the Intracoastal Waterway in Socastee are still strugglnig with recovery. Several residents have also experienced contracting scams and looting.
Mennonite groups with the Mennonite Disaster Service have taken shifts throughout the last six months with helping to repair homes.
“We’ll see them come out of their shell, they are usually depressed when we come, because can you imagine going through this three times in three years?” said volunteer Everett Moore. “So they don’t talk very much but like this gentleman here after three days, he ‘s talking more.”
Over in the Savannah Bluff Neighborhood on the Waccamaw River, Lisa Saunders has lived in her home since Decemer with no air conditioning. Her and her husband do all the repair work themselves.
“We came in, we built a 2×4 counter, dropped the kitchen sink into it, we put up shelves, we built a shower out of plastic, we put a commode in,” said Saunders.
Having to repeat the process since 1983 when they moved in, she says no matter what the water will always mean something to her.
“When I sit out here on the deck, it’s just so peaceful, it’s awesome, so I like it.” said Saunders.
