CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Council says it wants to hear from the owners of Indian Wells Golf Club before it decides on a controversial development there.

Council deferred first reading of an ordinance Tuesday to put 563 homes on the golf course in Garden City. Dozens of neighbors near Indian Wells were at the meeting and some spoke in opposition to the development.

Council member Tyler Servant, who represents the Garden City area, says council should hear from Founders Group International, which is owned by Chinese investors, about how ongoing litigation could affect the development of Indian Wells.

“Mr. Chairman, I believe it is incumbent on us to search out for the truth and the facts in this situation,” Servant said to council chair Johnny Gardner. “That’s why we were elected.”

County council will invite Nick Dou, Dan Liu and the two investors’ lawyers to speak at the June 4 council meeting.

The county’s planning commission recommended approval of the development at its April meeting. The plans were slightly altered since then, adding 43 more homes, but removing any space for businesses.

Founders Group International owns 22 Grand Strand golf courses.
