Horry County Council listened to people who live in the Legends Drive area and voted down a proposed special tax district.
A majority who live in that area were against the tax district, voting last week to reject it.
Ultimately council had the final say and at their meeting Tuesday upheld the people’s vote.
Supporters of the tax district said it would help with road widening and repair and increase property values. Those against the district argued the repairs should not fall on taxpayers, because Legends Drive is privately owned.
“The voters got out, they had a large voter turnout,” Chairman Mark Lazarus said. “And so we adhered to the will of the people.”
Residents rejected the district 379 to 103 at the polls.
