CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County is trying to figure out how much to pay its police officers and firefighters.
Horry County Council wants to see if a pay scale can be implemented to pay its public safety employees. It passed a resolution Tuesday night, asking the county to develop a plan to implement a pay scale for public safety.
Council member Cam Crawford, who represents the Socastee area, brought up the motion, saying it would start the process of paying police officers and firefighters more.
“I’d like to see the plan based around three things, which would be time served, rank and cost of living,” Crawford said.
Some council members said pay raises could be funded by the hospitality fee, which was used to pay off debt from the RIDE I program.
“It is a reason for us to hold strongly to that $18 million that we negotiated from the hospitality fee, so that we can use towards the pay scale to better pay these police officers and firemen,” said Dennis DiSabato, a council member representing most of Myrtle Beach.
Up to $25 million from that hospitality fee is going towards construction of Interstate 73.
The pay scale plan will be developed in time for county council’s budget retreat next month.
