CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County Council passed their $528.4 million spending budget for the next fiscal year during Tuesday night’s meeting.

The county plans to spend around $111,000 on new litter crews to keep the streets clean, increase the stormwater fee by an additional $15, and raise the salaries of public safety personnel. Horry County officials say more money will go toward publics safety because the county is experiencing so much growth.

While the proposed budget includes pay raises for both fire rescue crews and police, Council say more needs to be done.

“The first thing we need to do is make sure we have no vacancies,” says Mark Lazarus, Chairman of Horry County Council. “We need to fill those vacancies, and we need to hold those positions for a period of time.”

While the new budget does not include any tax increases, the current stormwater fee will increase an additional $15. The county says the current fee of $29.40 for single family homes is not enough to maintain the already existing developments in addition to the new developments that are popping up.

Third reading of the budget passed tonight, however, it will not be finalized until Council’s next meeting in July.
