CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Horry County council members say they’d like to look at creating “no burn zones” in the county.

Council member Harold Worley brought up the idea in Tuesday’s county council meeting.

Council Chair Mark Lazarus says they understand several farmers in the area need to burn parts of their land before they plant new crops.

However, Lazarus says with several housing subdivisions in the county, doing so could be dangerous.

“We have other areas throughout the county basically east of the waterway that have the same issues where the population has grown a good bit, and a lot of people are still concerned after the fires that   burned through Barefoot Resort. So, we’re very cautious, and if it’s becoming a nuisance, I think it’s something we need to look at for better quality of life,” said Lazarus.

If this were to happen, Lazarus says there’d be specific areas in the county where you wouldn’t be allowed to burn trash or fields.

He says they’ll discuss the issue at the county’s next public safety committee meeting.
