The local army recruitment district led the nation in recruiting this last quarter, combining the efforts of the Florence, Georgetown, Sumter and Myrtle Beach offices.

Staff Sergeant Nathan Shurter with the Myrtle Beach office says they have worked harder to build a relationship with 15 of the nearby high schools and three of the local colleges.

“We have had such a presence in the high schools and mentoring them and talking with their parents, and being active in the community, the first ones they think of are the army recruiters in Myrtle Beach,” Shurter said.

With Horry County having such a strong presence of veterans and military history, Shurter says it helps instill an interest in children from a young age.

“There’s a lot of career opportunities for people that want to continue family traditions or just feel the desire to serve their country right now,” Shurter said.

Daniel Walters graduated from Conway High School and says he grew up interacting with local recruitment officers and has family members who served.

“I’ve seen many people who have been in the army and treat each other like brothers. According to my sister’s experience, you go out there and meet new people, make new friends and new people,” describes Walters.
