CONWAY, SC (WBTW) – Whether the Horry County administrator will continue to have a job was expected to be part of a special meeting with the council on Monday.
However, Horry County Council Chair Johnny Gardner told News13 he plans to take the topic of administrator Chris Eldridge’s job off the agenda.
Gardner said tonight’s vote would have been to not renew Eldridge’s contract, but Eldridge’s attorney called about working out a deal for a severance package. That could happen in the next few weeks, Gardner said.
According to the agenda posted on the Horry County Council website, the future of I-73 will be discussed with a “proposed confidentiality agreement between Horry County and municipalities related to funding for I-73.”
Council held a special meeting once already to discuss the employment status of Chris Eldridge. That was a contentious and emotional meeting in which council voted on whether Eldridge should keep his job.

The controversy of a claim of an extortion attempt involving an associate of Chairman Johnny Gardner and a subsequent South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigation has lingered over council since before Christmas.
Even though Eldridge avoided the chopping block, council remains split on the future of the county administrator.
