MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – A new group in Horry County aims to end substance abuse in our community.

It’s a grassroots organization called H.O.P.E which stands for Halting Overdose through Partnership and Education and is made up of professional and non-professional volunteers.

On Thursday morning, some members of the group met with students at the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology to honor students who helped create the H.O.P.E logo. They also previously met with the pre-med students to talk about the affect of addiction of the body.

“I lost my son in December of 2014,” said member of the group, Kathy Keenan. “He was a heroin addict and he used heroin tainted with fentanyl. So it’s my passion to save other kids and get the message out there before they start using.”

H.O.P.E meets the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at the Waterbrook Community Church. Anyone from the public is welcome to attend.
