Hundreds of sandwiches from the Grand Strand Sandwich Co. had to be recalled on Tuesday after the FDA announced the possibility of listeria contamination.
The FDA confirmed a meat slicer at the Grand Strand Sandwich Co. in Longs tested positive on January 3.
But, Manager Kirk Mcumbee says none of their sandwiches have proven to have listeria in them yet. Mcumbee didn’t want to do an on camera interview but told News13 that on Tuesday he had 28 cases of Italian subs returned to him from local stores.
On Wednesday he says he got the results from ESS Labs and that all the sandwiches tested negative for listeria.
But, he says 280 cases of frozen ham and cheese croissants were sent to North Carolina and put on shelves right before the test came back showing the meat slicer tested positive for listeria.
Now he says he’s in the process of getting those tested.
“I got a call yesterday from our distributor for lunchbox sandwiches they told me there could be contamination in some of their products, and I was told to pull them immediately and discard of them. The Italian subs. ” said Amy Robinson, a Tiger Mart employee in Longs.
She says the lunchbox sandwiches are a crowd favorite for workers on the go.
“They’re a well known company we’ve been doing business with them for many years. I mean we probably sell about 30 cases a week of the lunchbox sandwiches.” said Robinson.
According to the FDA, there have been no reported illnesses so far.
