MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The Goddess of the Sea, a 12-foot tall bronze sculpture by artist Kristen Visbal, was installed Wednesday morning at Myrtle Beach’s Plyler Park on Ocean Boulevard.

The bronze statue features a mermaid and two leaping dolphins. Visbal, the statue’s artist, is the same sculptor who designed the bronze statue of a young girl, hands on hips, staring down the Wall Street bull.

Funding for this centerpiece art project was raised locally, according to the City of Myrtle Beach. Sources include Buz Plyler, owner of the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove on Ocean Boulevard, and the Myrtle Beach Public Arts Initiative. The City of Myrtle Beach contributed a matching amount to make this ocean-themed public art piece a reality.

Dedication ceremonies for the statue and the newly renovated Plyler Park will be held during the Sun Fun Festival in June.
