PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WBTW) – Rescuers say the search is over for the swimmer reported missing from Pawleys Island. Chief Doug Eggiman with Midway Fire Rescue says the male victim was taken to Waccamaw Hospital in critical condition. 

Midway Fire Rescue worked with the SC National Guard to find the swimmer reported missing near the pier Tuesday night. A tweet from Pawleys Island Police Department confirmed the search was on for the swimmer around 6 p.m. Midway Fire says crews were also utilizing a Coast Guard helicopter to find the male.

Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson says the victim is 28-year-old Carlos Ramirez. He and his wife were on vacation in Pawleys Island from Marietta, Georgia. Ramirez was in the water boogie boarding just before we went under, the coroner says.

Ramirez’s death has been ruled a drowning.
